York Circle - A brief history:

  • The Catenian Association was founded in Manchester in 1908.  (100th anniversary in Oct 2008)

  • York Circle was inaugurated  on 24th February 1920.  Documentation of its full history is sketchy.

  • On 25/07/74 it celebrated its 596th meeting with a membership of 4 Brothers.  Meetings were at the Black Swan.

  • By its 600th meeting 4 months later membership had risen to 9.

  • In the early seventies there were 15 to 18 dual members.  Provincial meetings were at the Gymcrack Room.  There were 200 present when Province were reminded that the Gymcrack Room had the longest bar in the country!

  • In 1984 by its 700th meeting membership had risen to 21 Brothers.  Meetings were now at the Yorkshire Club.

  • By its 800th meeting membership had reached 29 Brothers.  Meetings had moved to the Gymcrack Rooms.

  • Its 900th meeting celebrated on 24 Oct 2002 showed a membership of 37 Brothers.  Meetings moved to the Beechwood  Close Hotel in 1990.

  • In March 2008 we were on the move again - this time to Fulford Golf Club.

  • York's 1000th meeting will be in the year 2011 and we all hope to be here to celebrate this special occasion!
